If you browse social media groups in Bangladesh during the warm months, you have almost certainly encountered the popular viral claim: "Never turn off your inverter air conditioner! If you let it run 24 hours a day, it stays in low-power cruise mode and your monthly electricity bill will actually be lower than if you turn it on and off."
1. The Viral Claim: 'Never Turn Off Your Inverter AC'
The logic presented in viral posts sounds convincing on the surface: starting an air conditioner requires high surge power to cool down warm walls and furnishings, whereas a running inverter consumes minimal wattage to sustain a steady climate. But is this claim physically accurate under thermodynamic laws?
2. The ATC Test: Real Data from a 1.5 Ton Unit in Dhaka
To settle this debate with empirical evidence, ATC’s engineering lab conducted a 14-day controlled test in a typical 150-sq-ft Dhaka apartment bedroom utilizing a certified 1.5-ton DC Inverter AC:
- Scenario A (Continuous 24/7 Operation): The AC was set to 26°C and left running continuously for 7 days without interruption. Total power consumed: 81.4 kWh.
- Scenario B (Intermittent 10-Hour Operation): The AC was operated only when occupied (from 10:00 PM to 8:00 AM) at 26°C, and switched off when the occupant departed for work. Total power consumed: 38.2 kWh.
The outcome is unambiguous: Scenario A consumed more than DOUBLE the electricity of Scenario B!
3. Inrush Current vs Continuous Idle Consumption
Why did the viral theory fail? Because of fundamental heat transfer laws: heat continually migrates into an air-conditioned room through windows, doors, and walls. Even at a low cruising draw of 350 Watts, running an AC for 14 redundant daytime hours consumes ~4.9 kWh of power every single day.
Moreover, modern DC inverter compressors feature built-in Soft Start circuits. They do NOT experience high destructive startup amp spikes unlike vintage non-inverter units. Starting up requires negligible extra power compared to running for 10 empty hours!
4. The Engineering Verdict: When to Leave It On vs Turn Off
ATC Golden Rule for Inverter ACs:
• Leaving the room for under 45 minutes? Leave the AC running. The energy required to re-cool the space will roughly equal the cruising power during a brief absence.
• Leaving for more than 1 to 2 hours? Always switch the AC off. The thermal savings from turning off the unit completely outweigh any restart penalty.
5. Three Other Dangerous Viral AC Myths Debunked
- Myth: "Pouring water over the outdoor unit makes it cool better."
Danger: Direct tap water causes electrical short-circuits in the outdoor inverter PCB and mineral scaling on condenser fins. Only high-pressure deionized jet cleaning should be used. - Myth: "Setting temperature to 16°C cools the room faster."
Reality: Air blown by the fan is the same temperature. You only guarantee that your compressor never turns off, driving electric bills through the roof. - Myth: "Gas gets automatically consumed like petrol and needs annual refilling."
Reality: An AC operates on a sealed hermetic closed-loop system. If your gas is low, there is an active copper leak that MUST be brazed with nitrogen pressure testing before refilling!
